ABSTRACT:
Transactions, or sequences of actions that give the illusion of executing atomically, are a recurring theme in design of parallel systems ranging from memory systems to database systems. Today, the rise of multicore computers has stimulated a rush of research to find programming models that can support ordinary programmers in writing efficient but simple multi-threaded programs, and transactional memory is a leading candidate for such a model. I will describe the TIC (Transactions with Isolation and Cooperation) model and place it in the wider context of a search for a model that balances local reasoning and simplicity with generality and efficiency.
