Software Systems Compliance with the AI Act

Abstract: The European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) is the very first attempt in the world to regulate AI systems. In the first part of the talk, I will present the lessons learned from the First Grand Challenge 2023, a competition at University of St. Gallen involving interdisciplinary teams tasked with assessing the legal compliance of real-world AI-based systems with the AI Act. The competition provided first-hand experience and practical knowledge regarding the AI Act’s requirements, highlighing research challenges for the software engineering and AI communities. This work has been presented at RAIE (Responsible AI Engineering) workshop at ICSE 2024.
Biography: Paolo Falcarin is Associate Professor at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, where he is part of the Software and Systems Verification group. His research covers Software Security and Protection, Empirical Software Engineering, distributed systems. Paolo is associate editor of the Computers & Security journal and he is teaching Software Security, Project Management, and Software Development Methodologies in Venice. https://www.unive.it/people/paolo.falcarin
