ABSTRACT:
In the last two decades, various ways for the representation of smooth surfaces have been developed, such as
Subdivision surfaces
* G-splines
* Simplex splines
* Surface splines
* Polycube splines
We recall the underlying principles and discuss the main features of these concepts.
All these constructions are either restricted to special geometries, or become extremely complicated as the requested smoothness is increased.
As an alternative, we propose the so-called ambient B-spline method, which allows the representation of Ck-surfaces of arbitrary topology based on trivariate standard tensor product B-splines.
